About Singapore

Singapore, a small island nation connected by two bridges to Malaysia, has a diverse mix of citizens, each of whom will greet the traveler in the manner traditional to their culture. English is one of four official languages – the other three are Tamil, Malay, and Mandarin – and most people there speak English as well as at least one of the other three.

Singapore itself is quite small, but it is home to one of the world’s most flourishing economies as well as to traditional ways of life. Many large businesses are headquartered in this little country, and it prides itself on being able to cater to all their ultra-modern needs. It is most probably impossible to be bored here; Singapore has something for everyone.

Singapore’s currency is the Singapore dollar (not to be confused with the US or Australian dollar.

Please note that improper behavior (spitting in the street, for example) will be punished with a fine. There are usually signs up in public places telling you what not to do and how much it will cost you if you are caught breaking the rule. Punishments for more serious offences include caning, imprisonment, and even the death sentence for drug trafficking.
